Cervical Cancer Task Force of Arkansas

1) Dr. Tom Bruce - Upstream Issues in Cancer Control

Dr. Bruce, a senior advisor for the Arkansas Department of Health presents information on the state of cancer care in Arkansas. Arkansas does not fare well in treating cancer, in comparison to other states. In particular, there are serious disparities between cancer outcomes for different racial and socioeconomic groups. This discussion explores whether we should be devoting more attention to primary causation than to early screening and better treatment protocols. Quite obviously, neither should be ignored at the expense of the other, but the topic is designed to explore ways that we might have greater success if we started earlier and pursued a more comprehensive approach to primary prevention.

2) Dr. Kelley Daniel - Access: The Key to Comprehensive Cancer Control

Dr. Daniel, senior specialist in the area of state and local campaigns for the National Government Relations Department of the American Cancer Society, presents information on the importance of access with an emphasis on how ACS CAN is presenting the issue to the public, how ACS CAN is evaluating policy options as they are presented in the state and federal arenas, and how ACS CAN will focus on the issue in the upcoming elections and in the post-election environment.

3) Dr. Geoffrey Goldsmith and Marcia Bias, BSN, RN - Improving Colorectal Cancer Screening in the Primary Care Setting

Dr. Goldsmith and Ms. Bias with the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences Department of Family and Preventive Medicine share results from their recently completed study. Their presentation reports on multiple strategies used to improve the rate of colorectal cancer screening within rural family medicine practices throughout Arkansas.

4) Dr. Creshelle Nash - Health Disparities in Arkansas

Dr. Nash, Medical Director for the Arkansas Minority Health Commission shares a presentation that includes an overview of the issues surrounding health disparities in Arkansas, the work of the Arkansas Minority Health Commission and the Commission's vision for eliminating health disparities in Arkansas.

5) Dr. Ronda Henry-Tillman, Dr. Paul Greene, Dr. Glen Mays, and Kelly Duke, MA - Colorectal Cancer Demonstration Project Update and Disparities Panel Discussion

Dr. Henry-Tillman and her team share the results of the Colorectal Cancer Demonstration Project up to this point as well as present information about future plans. Successes and challenges of the project are highlighted including issues surrounding access to care and health disparities.

6) Barbara Pauly, BS - Preventable Health Risks: Tobacco Issues in Arkansas

Ms. Pauly, Associate Branch Chief for the ADH Tobacco Prevention and Cessation Branch, presents a review of the most recent tobacco control information in Arkansas and how the Tobacco Prevention and Cessation Branch attacks these issues. Data from the most current Arkansas Adult Tobacco Survey and the Arkansas Youth Tobacco Survey are unveiled and trends are highlighted.

7) Dr. Nicholas Lang - Cancer: The Role of Cooking and Eating

Dr. Lang, Chief Medical Officer for the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences Medical Center presents a review of the role of interactions between environmental expense and genetic factors in producing risk using colon cancer as an example.
