Summit Overview
The Arkansas Cancer Summit is an annual event hosted by the Arkansas Cancer Coalition. The purpose of the Summit is to showcase the recent progress that Coalition partners have made toward meeting goals and objectives of the state comprehensive cancer plan, and to provide opportunities for information sharing, networking, and skills building.

The ninth installment in the Summit series will continue the ARCC's tradition of providing an annual forum for discussion and collaboration among the cancer prevention and control communities the state. This year's theme "Home Run to Health" will focus on what the Summit Planning Team calls "Keeping the Promise that we made last year - committing to and taking action on opportunities that impact the burden of cancer in Arkansas."

Coalition members took "The Promise" out to policy makers all across the state last year, to educate about and gain buy-in for goals set by a non-partisan committee of cancer control stakeholders. This year's Summit will address progress on the "Promise" movement, and will also look at today's issues, sometimes reaching beyond cancer to address chronic disease rates overall.

Major themes that will inform this year's discussion are:

  • Advancing Universal Access to Care
  • Eliminating Health Disparities
  • Promoting Health Lifestyles

Summit Objectives are:

  • To celebrate ARCC successes and highlight partner's best practices and model programs.
  • To provide insight, networking opportunities, and resources for addressing the burden of cancer in Arkansas.
  • To discuss healthcare access and cancer health disparities while determining the impact these two issues have on the burden of cancer in Arkansas.
  • To address healthy lifestyle changes including tobacco prevention, nutrition and physical activity and discuss the importance that these changes play in lowering an individual's cancer risk.
  • To plan for ARCC staff and Interest Group representatives' next steps for action.
  • To formally present the second edition of the Arkansas Cancer Plan.

Cancer strikes one out of every two men and one out of every three women, killing 17 Arkansans every day. Even though people are increasingly living with cancer rather than dying from it, people with cancer on average still lose up to 15 years of productive life. That's a loss that Arkansas simply can't afford. Come and join us while we share the evidence and prepare one another to ask the difficult questions and demand reasonable answers from our policy makers.
